Replace speedometer

My older brother moved out of town and told me I can keep his R3. He hasn't used it for a long time and I'm doing maintenance and repair work as far as I can.

I'm mostly buying parts from aftermarket, a lot cheaper than OEM. Now I'm a bit stuck with changing the speedometer, I'm nervous about messing up the electrical system. Is there any wiring diagram I can check that shows what each color represents so it's easier to sort out? Also ideas where to buy a good one, with a cleaner, modern look?

Pretty sure theres a service manual online in one of their websites if not the main one. Theres a wiring diagram towards the end. I'll try to find it too and post it here.

Hmm. I think the Yamaha wiring diagram is available on the website. Anyway, for the speedometer, it's possible to replace it on the R3. Just follow the diagram strictly and it's got detailed color codes. Gy is gray, O is orange, W/R is white/red, Y/L is yellow/light blue, Sb is sky blue, then Y is yellow of course. I don't know if what I'm saying is relevant but I hope it helps.

Try checking websites like manualslib.com or even just a general Google search like typing in "Yamaha R3 <your year> service manual PDF" should turn up results.
The wiring diagrams in those manuals are usually very detailed and will show exactly what each wire color corresponds to.
I also suggesting getting aftermarket digital speedometer.
You can check options like KOSO, Acewell, and even some smaller custom gauge manufacturers.
Just be aware that going fully digital might require some more in-depth wiring knowledge, as you'll likely be dealing with more than just power and ground, like signal inputs for speed, RPMs, etc.
Anyway, you should check the product descriptions carefully for compatibility and included wiring instructions.

And while aftermarket digital speedometers like KOSO or Acewell are fantastic options, they might require some additional wiring skills. It's definitley wise to double-check compatibility before making a purchase

About the cleaner looking unit, go with digital universal clusters that have a sleeker look than the stock one but be sure it supports a pulse type speed signal like the R3 uses
