RPM spike on startup?

When I start my 2019 R3, it briefly revs up to 3000 RPM before settling into its normal idle. It's got me scratching my head. Has anyone come across this before?

Hey, thanks for your help! I'll keep an eye on how often it happens and take a closer look at the fuel system if it persists. Could other factors like a dirty air filter also play a role?

That quick rev spike sounds like the ECU's doing a little warm-up or maybe, it's just a throttle sensor glitch. If it's completely chill after that, it's probably nothing to worry about. But if it gets wild, start checking the TPS or idle control.

Trust me on this, you're not alone, plenty of us R3 riders have seen that weird hiccup. About that, yes, it could also play a role. But then again you really need a proper diagnostic tool to figure that out.

I totally agree! It's usually fine as long as it settles down quickly. If it doesn't, then checking the TPS and idle control is definitely the way to handle it.

Thanks for the info from you both, it really puts my mind at ease knowing this is a known thing with the R3. It seems I might be making a mountain out of a molehill as long as it settles down quickly. Is checking the TPS or idle control something a novice can handle or is that a job better left for a shop?

I had the same issue on my friend's R3 after we put in a new exhaust last year. The engine would rev high when cold, but it always went back to normal. We didn't do anything about it, and it still runs great. If you know your way around tools, you could check the TPS with a manual. But if you're not sure, taking it to a shop is a good idea

@slipstreamsquadron22 Thanks for sharing your experience with your friend's bike.

Based on all the feedback here I'll hold off on trying to check the sensors myself. My plan is to just monitor the bike's behavior for now. Will probably ask a mechanic to look at it during its next oil change just for peace of mind.

To all those that are still having the issue with RPMs spiking on startup. I've also had the same thing for the past few months up until last night when the bike wouldn't start at all. Fuel pump would engage, engine would turn over and over but would not fire a single time. First thing I tried was replacing the spark plugs and the bike fired up flawless WITHOUT the weird RPM spike.

So if you've got that spike when starting your bike hot or cold, take it as a sign to check the condition of your spark plugs asap, could save yourself from getting stranded.
