my crazy friend thought it was a good idea to take my bike which already had a faulty brake for a spin few days back, then he tipped and high sided, but the muffler bracket snapped and although he managed to get it back on the road, now I'm waiting for a replacement part on a tight budget. I decided to keep on using the bike like that for now but after riding, I noticed more heat and a 0.5 mpg drop. Some say running without a muffler could damage the bike, while others think it's fine with the stock setup. Is running without a muffler for a week or two safe, or could it cause long term problems? any advice maybe?

nah think you'll be fine. there is some potential for long term damage but i doubt a week or two will destroy the engine. yea the mpg will drop and the engine will run leaner and a bit hotter. if you're worried about potential damage park it and wait for the muffler to arive

I agree with @youngbiker95 here but definitely try to get that bracket fixed ASAP though. Riding rough can lead to bigger issues as you go.

Haha, absolutely! I mean unless you're racing down to the grocery store, you're not going to hurt anything by waiting a week. You'll be just fine until that muffler arrives. And hey at least it's nice that no one's complaining about the noise just yet

I agree with the other, it all be okay as long as you keep rides super short (like, just to work and back if it's close).
also be gentle on the throttle, not ripping it! Wear earplugs for your own sake.

you know, you could temporarily rig up something with a piece of old pipe or a cheap universal 'glass pack' muffler from a parts store and some clamps, just to get some backpressure and reduce the noise until the proper part arrives? It won't be pretty, but it might save your engine

Generally, for a week or two of light, careful riding, it's unlikely to cause catastrophic damage to a modern, fuel injected bike. Many people ride with aftermarket slip ons that offer minimal back pressure

Probably until your neighbors get really annoyed and start to egg you whenever you start the bike :)

All jokes aside, avoid driving it too much, there's some risk for long term damage to the engine and maybe your eardrums, but it's not like you'll tear the engine to shreds if you drive it around that way for a while.

What muffler did you get? Stock or something aftermarket?
